Bring the gym into your home and enjoy an efficient, high-caliber workout with the Horizon EX-57 elliptical trainer, which works your legs as well as your upper body. Perfect for rigorous training routines, the EX-57 offers an eight-level electronic resistance system, along with a heavy 14-pound flywheel that maintains pedal and arm momentum while offering a smooth, quiet operation. More significantly from a user perspective, it offers nine goal-oriented programs. You can choose one of three different goals (time, distance, and calories) and one of three terrains (manual, reverse train, and hills). The crisp LCD screen, meanwhile, offers key workout feedback, helping you develop an effective training regimen.

Horizon employs a heavy-duty flywheel that provides continuous velocity, so as your feet move the pedals, the flywheel’s momentum carries you through the complete motion. As a result, the trainer feels very natural and not at all choppy. Plus, the flywheel is extremely quiet, making the trainer ideal for home use. Horizon also applies a magnetic brake to the flywheel, creating more consistent resistance during a workout. And the instep-stacked flywheel design–where the flywheel sits above the pedals rather than in line with them–delivers a lower step-on height for easy access, along with a stride length that’s longer, more natural, and more versatile regardless of the user, workout type, and fitness level. As an added benefit, the unit is smaller and shorter than other ellipticals, so it fits in almost any room, including low-ceiling basements.

Horizon’s Ergoflow elliptical geometry is built around your body, not the machine’s components. The distance between the pedals have also been narrowed to create a more natural walking motion, and the pivoting footpad imitates how your foot’s position changes as you move forward. And a more natural, ergonomic movement means less stress on your knees, hips, and lowers back, so you enjoy longer workouts and faster results.

About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Many elliptical trainers include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won’t strain sensitive joints.

I’m trying to help a friend get a part to fix her 5 year old Horizon elliptical machine. When their products reach this age, they pass off parts & service to a company called U.S. Assembly. I’ve tried to reach both the manufacturer and U.S. Assembly via phone messages and emails for the past two weeks. I’ve gotten no responses. Stay far away from this product unless you like the idea of discarding an expensive piece of equipment because you can’t get your hands on a $20 part.

My EX-57 was purchased from Amazon and delivered by ABF Freight Systems in Brooklyn, NY. ABF called and confirmed it would be delivered into the lobby of my building between 9 am and 5 pm on a designated day. My sitter went home at 5 pm that day and the truck finally showed up at 5:45 pm with only one guy in the truck. He told me that he could only deliver the machine if I could help him offload it from the truck. I pointed out that I was carrying a 15 month old baby on my arm and he said he could come back tomorrow (and I could skip another day at work waiting for him). I ended up putting my 15 month old down in the apartment and running down to get the 150-200 pound 6′ long crate off the truck. He had no ramp or lift so he lowered off the tailgate by hand with me catching it and we jointly rolled it end over end into the lobby. I called ABF and they told me that all drivers deliver alone and that lobby delivery means that you help the driver carry the crate. They effectively said that if you can’t help, it is your tough luck. If you aren’t in good shape or have a bad back, plan to get additional help. The machine itself was very easy to assemble. The action feels smooth and the machine is quiet.

This machine is amazing: (1) we needed an elliptical that would fit into our basement, which has a low ceiling. This elliptical fits fine; (2) we wanted something simple, but stable. This machine is VERY stable–no rocking; (3) we wanted something cost-effective. This is only about $500. After looking at machines that were $1,500 and up, and trying low-end machine at Sports Authority, that were about to topple over, the Horizon Fitness EX-57 is a revelation. It meets our every need, and for only $500? Incredible. BTW: you can put it together yourself in about 2 hours. Everything fits, very stable, no squeaking.

I researched every web site and every online store looking at ratings and prices for various brands of ellipticals. Horizon isnt a top of the line brand, but in numerous reviews it got good ratings for its price range. I knew I didnt want to spend over $1000 on an elliptical. I just wanted a machine for casual use for my fiancee and I….something with various levels, a digital display, smooth action, and a sturdy frame. We got all of that with this ellipctial.

The bad news is that mine came with a broken front casing. It doesnt affect the action of the elliptical at all, its just a cosmetic issue, but it still ticked me off pretty good. After I put all the pieces together (expect a good hour or two doing this), the cracked piece didnt really bother me. Its in the front, it was facing a wall, out of sight out of mind.

The stride is a little close….I thought it would be fine as a I was doing all the research but I think I might need just a little bigger stride. My fiancee loves it though, just right for her.

The display can be a little dark and hard to see since it is not backlit. Jus tbe sure the room is well lit, either by windows or a lamp.

The cup holder is useless…too low and at an angle. I dont use it at all.

The little shelf if perfect for holding my Ipod but I cant imagine trying to set a book on it. Just too small a space. I usually just close my eyes and isten to my music anyways, so that doesnt really bother me.

The action is smooth, the rollers seem sturdy and secure on the tracks. The pedals are nice and big with the edge around the front so your foot doesnt slip off.

Overall, this is a good machine for the price. I would have liked a backlit display, a music port, and possibly a wider stride. But you cant find a sub-$500 machine with all that right now.
