About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Good brand, good service, found it a bit difficult to set program. Instructions were too brief.

Ordered this from Amazon– reviews were good, and Nautilus has a good name. When I unpacked the bike, it had two consoles and no instructions (manual or assembly) or hardware (screws, bolts, etc.) — they must have really bad quality control at the factory. So I contacted Nautilus (they did not respond to email, but phone worked and they were nice) and they said they would send me the hardware and said it would take two days to arrive. After a week and half it had not arrived, so I called them and they said it was out of stock and would not be available for A MONTH. A MONTH. In the meantime, I have had the parts for the bike spread out waiting for the hardware that will not come for another month??? If it actually ships in a month, it will be two months since I placed the order at Amazon that I might actually have a functioning exercise bike. This has been a real horror show. Obviously, I would urge caution when ordering this product.

I was really excited to receive the Nautilus R514 Recumbent Exercise Bike, but I can’t believe how much of a chore it was to put together. My other exercise bike is a Schwinn and it was much less trouble. The problem with the Nautilus is that there are many addenda to the assembly instructions that are printed on separate papers and just stuck into the manual. If you aren’t paying attention and lose or misplace one of those loose pieces of paper, it can really screw up the assembly process. It is also especially annoying that in order to assemble it I had to start by disassembling pieces. I don’t normally consider assembly when I am decided on how to rate a product, but in this case I really have to. It took me several hours to assemble it by myself, and I’m pretty good as assembling things.

As for the bike itself, it’s pretty good, but I don’t know that it is worth the cost. The price on this model is around $200 more than my Schwinn, but the design and construction are very similar. I didn’t find that this model was any sturdier than the Schwinn, either. It does have a couple of advantages to my Schwinn: (1) you don’t have to step over the bar to get into the seat, it isn’t a huge advantage but I did notice it was easier, and (2) it has a fan, of course I can just as easily put a fan next to my other bike. It also has what I consider a pretty annoying disadvantage, no book holder! I’m sure I can create a make-shift book holder to use while I am on the Nautilus, but it is such a stupid oversight. I can’t remember the last time I saw an exercise bike that didn’t have a place to set a book or magazine.

One thing I like a lot about this bike is that it comes with a heart rate strap and can read your rate directly from it. That’s a lot more convenient and comfortable then using the little handlebars. It’s no $200 worth of convenience though.

I think this bike is fine, it is effective, and it is well-made. But there just isn’t anything about it that stands out and makes me feel like it is worth the extra money.

This is my 3rd exercise bike for home use. This is by far the quietest/smoothest of them all and is worth the $100 or so extra. Plus you do get a much better warranty when you compare the time frames. The seat back could be slightly more comfortable (I wish more companies would make them out of mesh) but that is my only complaint. It certainly does require two people to put together and a power screwdriver will save you lots of time with install. Expect about an hour for 2 people to assemble.

My thoughts on the assembly process:

1) The actual manual had 4 (loose) addendum pages and weren’t located in the proper page locations. So just review them before assembly, otherwise you’ll be scratchin your head trying to figure out the actual figures. My only question is why they just could’t print out a complete new manual? It’s nothing fancy.

2) The lock down seat adjustment has to be the absolute worst design. The knob requires to many turns…if fact it almost has to come completely out for the seat to slide. Then you have to line the screw up with an adjustment hole..that you can’t see??)

3) The Operators manual refers to a “one” speed fan. Well, mine has multiple speeds, but is quite noisy!

All in all, if they just fixed the simple things, this would be an assume bike. Love the variations/options available.

ALSO NOTE: Nowhere is it mentioned that it requires AC power for the display, (no battery operation). So keep a wall socket close.
