About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

I’m not sure whose payroll these other reviewers are on, or maybe they’ve just ever used an exercise bike post-1975, but this thing is a piece of garbage. I own a NordicTrack ProRider, and wanted to try this because it had a physical flywheel vs. the magnetic one in the Nordi. Well, first off, this doesn’t feel any more like a real bike, so right away I lost on the deal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not recommending the Nordi either, but this thing does make it look like a Rolls Royce.

When I took the Schwinn out of the package, it actually looked pretty high quality. The packaging was nice, the steps seemed simple and the first 5 minutes seemed like heaven. I actually thought to myself, wow, I’m gonna write a GREAT review on this thing if it works half as good as it looks. Wrong. Within 10 minutes of reading the mind-numbingly stupid instructions, my girlfriend was trying to talk me out of throwing it in the ocean. There are no explanations, very few exploded diagrams, and each drawing seemed to be done from 20 feet away – not even using the full micro-sized page on the booklet they provided.

I read the other reviewer’s comments about bumping his knees and I thought he must be doing something wrong. Nope. Unless you’re an elf, forget this piece of junk. You will hit your knees if you even come close to a workout.

The display also attracted me to this bike. Nah ah. Crap too. Hope you want to ride it in a dark room for the rest of your life, otherwise you’ll be guessing as to your workout.

Don’t get me started on the seat. I hope Tony Atlas is your neighbor. If not good luck locking this puppy down.

The description says something about a magazine rack. Where? Where would it go? I have a magazine rack for it – they’re called my hands. The display sticks out so far, good luck even trying to put an aftermarket rack on here.

Overall, the idea and features of this bike sound great, and the pieces seem to be quality, but this is a very, very poorly executed design and you’ll be miserable if you’ve ever used a real exercise bike before.

Sorry Schwinn, that’s the last thing I buy from you. Oh, BTW, this POS is actually made by Nautilus. I don’t know who to blame, so I won’t be buying either of their products anymore.

I don’t actually own the Schwinn 140 exercise bike, but I was planning on buying one. Rather than ordering it from Amazon without trying it, I went to a local sporting goods store and tried it out. Glad I did!

The riding position of this bike was just awkward. It didn’t feel right at all. It has a lot of adjustments but I still couldn’t get it to feel like the bikes at the gym. I was also surprised how close my knees came to the handle bars. I wear 30″ inseam pants, so I’m not tall.

Anyway, there was another bike to try at this store – a ProForm upright model with too many bells and whistles – games, ipod doc, etc – stuff I don’t need. BUT, the riding position was comfortable, and the seat felt great. I didn’t buy that one either, but it’s on my list of possibilities. The Schwinn 140 is off that list.

Sorry, Schwinn, I really wanted to like you.

I totally agree with the other one star review. I would also add that my bike didn’t work. The LED console didn’t operate. I called the factory. They asked me to put a volt meter on the cabling (which I did but honestly, how many customers would)! Anyway, I finally gave up and am in the process of shipping it back. This was my first purchase from Schwinn since I was a kid delivering papers…not the same company that I remembered.

The Schwinn 140 may be a wonderful product, but unfortunately I will never know.

This product seemed to fill the bill for a Christmas gift for my son. A similar model (the 130) was the top-rated stationary bike in a 2009 Consumer Reports issue. Plus, even though the time was short, I could get it delivered by Amazon in time for Christmas. It arrived via UPS in a large box that looked somewhat the worse for wear, but rather than opening it, I decided to decorate the box for Christmas morning thinking that my son & I would move the box to his apartment for assembly. After all that’s where he would use it.

We did move it to his apartment on the following Sunday. It was a bit of a struggle because the box was large, awkward & weighs more than 80 pounds but eventually we got it to his apartment.

Having read some reviews on Amazon before ordering, I was prepared for an hour’s assembly work. It took much less.

However, that was not good news. We started unpacking, but before we had everything out of the box, my son saw that one of the parts was damaged. It was a plastic end cap to the rear stabilizer bar. The end cap was in pieces with some still inside the plastic wrapper and some at the bottom of the box.

We did not see any other damage so he called Amazon hoping we could get a replacement rear stabilizer bar with two good end caps. The agent was a little difficult to understand but eventually it was clear that Amazon could not/would not send the replacement part. We had no choice but to return the entire thing.

At that point we faced getting it all back in the box. Not a simple matter. We had not unpacked it with the idea that we might have to re-pack it. Eventually we got it all back in the box and lugged it back to my house for UPS pick-up. They did pick it up the next day – a Monday. From the consumer’s end, it sure seemed simpler to get a replacement part.

By the end of the week, I received an e-mail saying Amazon had issued me a refund – but nothing about shipping a new bike. The next Monday, I called customer service and was told that the refund was the end of the transaction as far as Amazon was concerned. If I wanted the bike I would have to order again. My son said he liked that product so I did order it. One might quote “fool me once, etc.” but I ordered it anyway.

Schwinn 2 arrived that Friday. The entire thing seemed like Groundhog Day. On Sunday my son came over so we could lug the box to his apartment. He saw a large hole punched in the middle of one side of the box. He even took a picture of the hole with his cell phone. I said though, the hole was not in same position as the stabilizer bar. We decided to take the box to his apartment for assembly anyway (I know, I know).

This time we noted the in-box locations of the parts carefully as we unpacked. We did not get far with unpacking however. My son removed the rear stabilizer bar and saw that this one was cracked too. I thought I must have been cracked for ordering this thing again! Back in the box. Back to the house.

This time I did not call customer service. I had no interest in another “replacement.” I just went to the Amazon website & saw that I could process the return that way. UPS picked up the box the next day (another Monday – another 80 lb Box – I wonder what that driver thinks). At the end of the week, I got an e-mail that the latest refund was processed.

The only good thing I can say about this is that Amazon was very efficient in getting the returns picked up and getting the refunds processed. Too bad it was not as efficient in getting a workable product to me. All I wanted was an exercise bike that did what the blurb on Amazon said it would do.

As I said at the beginning, I wish I could comment on how the Schwinn 140 performs, but I never found out.

What first got our attention was the name “Schwinn” … a bicycle manufacturer that has been around for YEARS but this bike is not top quality. It was very easy to put together – - great installation instructions. Had no trouble except at the very end figuring out the hook up of console but other than that .. a breeze. It is whisper quiet & very sturdy. The box it came in looked a little rough upon delivery which caused a few of the screws, washers, etc. to be loose in the box but everything was still there. Besides the fact of that the seat is TORTURE, there was ZERO instructions on how to operate the impressive “looking” console. I had to contact Schwinn & about a week later Nautilus finally emailed a pdf manual. BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM is that if the console quits to heck with pulse, watts, miles, etc. the ability to increase or decrease the resistance of the pedals is lost….like pedaling a bike with no chain. To replace the console after warranty is not cheap. For this price, this bike should be usable with or without a electricity.
